The three filters used to choose ingredients
It has to survive the stomach
Anything selected had to reach the large intestine intact enough to be useful there. That immediately rules out most of the ingredients that dominate the memory aisle, which are absorbed high in the gut and never meet a bacterium.
It has to work at a food-realistic amount
A 3 g scoop is small. Ingredients that only do something at ten or twenty grams were left out, however good the literature, because a jar of them would be a meal rather than a supplement[1].
It has to be describable without exaggeration
Every active in the jar has a mechanism that can be written in one honest sentence. If explaining an ingredient required a chain of speculation, it did not make the formula.
The gut-brain axis, plainly
Your large intestine hosts a bacterial population that ferments what you could not digest yourself. The products of that fermentation, mainly short-chain fatty acids, do not stay local: they enter circulation, feed the cells lining the colon, and participate in signalling that reaches well beyond the digestive tract. This is the pathway people mean when they say gut-brain axis. It is real, it is well studied at the level of physiology, and it is also frequently oversold by supplement marketing, so it is worth being precise about what is established and what is not.
Established: fermentable fiber changes which bacteria dominate, and it changes the metabolites they produce[2]. Established: most adults in the United States eat far less fiber than dietary guidance recommends[3]. Not established: that any particular fiber blend produces a measurable cognitive result in a healthy adult. BrainLive is formulated on the first two facts, and this page will not pretend the third has been settled.
Why fermentable fiber and not just any fiber
Fiber is a category, not an ingredient. Insoluble fiber adds bulk and speeds transit; it is useful, and it is not what this formula is doing. Fermentable fiber is the fraction that bacteria can actually eat. Konjac glucomannan is among the most viscous of the soluble fibers, which is why it also slows gastric emptying[5]. Resistant pea starch escapes digestion in the small intestine and arrives in the colon as substrate. Baobab fiber brings a mixed profile plus naturally occurring polyphenols. Three different substrates suit a wider range of bacterial populations than one would.
The glucose side of the formula
L-Arabinose is not a fiber and does not belong to the fermentation story. It inhibits sucrase, the enzyme that splits table sugar into glucose and fructose at the intestinal wall, so sucrose from a meal is absorbed more slowly. The practical effect is a flatter curve after a sweet breakfast. The brain is sensitive to that curve, which is the reason a memory formula bothers with it at all. It is a support mechanism, not a treatment for any condition of blood sugar regulation.
Spermidine, and what is honest to say about it
Spermidine is a polyamine present in wheat germ, aged cheese, mushrooms and soy. Laboratory work has connected it to autophagy, the recycling process cells use to clear damaged components, and that connection is the reason it has become interesting to longevity researchers. What exists in humans is largely observational: populations eating more spermidine-rich food show certain associations. Turning that into a promise about your memory would be a leap, and we are not making it. It is in the formula because the mechanism is plausible and the safety record of dietary spermidine is unremarkable, not because a trial proved a cognitive benefit[6].
A short glossary
- Gut-brain axis
- The two-way communication between the digestive tract, its bacterial population and the central nervous system, running through nerves, hormones and bacterial metabolites.
- Prebiotic
- A substrate that host bacteria ferment for a benefit to the host. Prebiotics are food for bacteria; probiotics are the bacteria themselves.
- Short-chain fatty acids
- Acetate, propionate and butyrate, produced when gut bacteria ferment fiber. Butyrate is the main energy source of the cells lining the colon.
- Resistant starch
- Starch that resists digestion in the small intestine and reaches the colon intact, where it behaves like a fermentable fiber.
- Polyamine
- A small molecule such as spermidine or putrescine involved in cell growth and renewal, found in both food and the body's own tissue.
- Autophagy
- The process by which a cell breaks down and recycles its own worn-out components. Slower with age, and the mechanism spermidine research focuses on.
- Viscous fiber
- Soluble fiber that thickens in water, slowing gastric emptying and the absorption of sugars from a meal.

Everything published here is drafted in house, then read by a member of our research panel before it goes live.
